The Natural Choice in Lighting is a small business located in the western mountains of Maine. We (Dick and Donna Stanchfield) established our business in 1981 and have been working together ever since. Through the years we have created many different styles of lamps and lampshades and through the learning process have developed our current product line. We have earned a reputation in the business of having a product that is of superior quality and we prove this by our 100 % guarantee of all of the products that we make.
Our business is a member of the Maine Made program which is run by the State of Maine to promote small business and ensure only top quality products represent the State of Maine's Craftsmenship. Only members of this program use this tag.
Most of our lampshades are cut (cutting is done on outer edge of pattern to accent edges of leaves, or around petals of flowers, etc.) and pierced (piercing is done with a fine needle, this accents centers of flowers, borders etc. every hole is hand punched .) We use several techniques to create our shades, some of the most popular lampshades we make are done by using a very old method called reverse painting. As this implies the painting is done on the reverse side of the shade, so that by day you see a white shade that is cut and pierced, but when illuminated the soft colors of the reverse painting show through. Stenciled shades show the pattern even when not illuminated and add a touch of color to any living space. We also have a collection of wildlife shades that we commissioned Maine Artist Jim Stinchfield to draw for us. Each shade is silkscreened, then a light, water color wash is used to enhance them. We had many requests for "hand laced style" shades and have now added this to our product line, as well as the looks like leather feels like leather , but isn't leather. (many animals have thanked us for that!!)
